AAA MICHIGAN REPORTS:STATEWIDE AVERAGE DAILY GAS PRICE UP TEN CENTS

Dearborn, Michigan (September 30, 2018) - AAA Michigan reports that compared to last week, the statewide average daily gas price has increased.  Michigan’s current daily statewide average is about $2.98 per gallon, about 10 cents more than last week’s average and about 48 cents more than this same time last year.

Compared to last week, Metro Detroit’s average daily gas price increased. Metro Detroit’s current average is about $2.97 per gallon, about four cent more compared to last week’s average and about 51 cents more than this same time last year.

Of the ten Michigan metro areas surveyed by AAA for self-serve unleaded fuel prices, the lowest average price can be found in the Flint area, where it’s about $2.96 a gallon. The highest average price can be found in the Marquette area for the second week in a row where it’s about $3.05 a gallon.

According to the latest reports from AAA:

State
Michigan ranked:
  • 14th in the nation for most expensive average daily gas price
  • 1st  in the national for biggest weekly change (+10 cents)
  • 7th  in the national for biggest monthly change (+9 cents)

    Regional
  • Unlike most of the country, state gas price averages in the Great Lakes and Central region continue to trend more expensive.
  • Overall, the increase in gas prices can be attributed to planned and unplanned maintenance at half a dozen refineries in the region.
  • Despite being on par with levels this time last year, the 52 million mark is one of the lowest levels seen since Memorial Day Weekend this year.
  • The low inventory is a contributing factor for the increasing gas prices.
  • Despite similar year-over-year inventory levels, some motorists in the region are paying in the neighborhood of 50-cents more to fill up compared to last September.

National

  • Pump prices are increasing as crude prices continue to rally.
  • Despite demand dropping and stocks growing, according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA), the national average has increased.
  • The increase is likely the result of crude prices continuously increasing over the summer, leading to an approximate $20 per barrel increase when compared to this time last year, and is now trickling over to retail gas prices.
  • As more winter blend gasoline makes its way to stations, which is cheaper to produce, motorists across the country are likely to see relief at the pump.
  • However, increasing crude prices could offset relief by making gasoline more expensive because the cost of crude constitutes approximately 50% of the cost of gasoline, according to EIA.

Global

  • Crude prices have rallied due to concerns around the impact of U.S.-imposed sanctions on Iran and economic collapse in Venezuela on global crude supply this fall.
  • The increase in crude prices occurred despite crude oil inventories increasing after five consecutive weeks of decline.
  • Domestic crude inventories are now lower than they were at this time last year.
  • The new crude data from EIA will likely leave the market searching for additional evidence of supply constraints, including next week’s EIA report, which could push crude prices even higher this fall
