AAA MICHIGAN REPORTS: STATEWIDE AVERAGE DAILY GAS PRICE DOWN A NICKEL

Dearborn, Michigan (September 23, 2018) - AAA Michigan reports that compared to last week, the statewide average daily gas price has decreased.  Michigan’s current daily statewide average is about $2.88 per gallon, about 5 cents less than last week’s average and about 45 cents more than this same time last year.

Compared to last week, Metro Detroit’s average daily gas price remains flat for the second week in a row.  Metro Detroit’s current average is about $2.92 per gallon, about the same as last two weeks’ average and about 50 cents more than this same time last year.

Of the ten Michigan metro areas surveyed by AAA for self-serve unleaded fuel prices, the lowest average price can be found in the Traverse City area for the third week in a row where it’s about $2.73 a gallon. The highest average price can be found in the Marquette area where it’s about $3.06 a gallon.

According to the latest reports from AAA:

State
Michigan ranked:
  • 19th in the nation for most expensive average daily gas price
  • 2nd  in the national for biggest weekly change (-5 cents)

    Regional
  • Area refineries are undergoing annual maintenance.
  • As pump prices see relatively small volatility, gasoline inventories continue to hover at the 53.1 million bbl mark.
  • With unplanned and planned maintenance at some Great Lakes and Central refineries, inventories could decline this fall.
National

  • The national average remains flat as fall begins.
  • With summer in the rearview mirror, gasoline demand has slumped.
  • According to the Energy Information Administration (EIA), demand for gasoline fell.
  • The drop in demand occurred alongside gasoline stocks dropping.
  • As the national average for regular gasoline continues to remain flat, EIA’s latest report mostly signals that supply and demand for gasoline are in sync.
  • That balance may tip as more gas stations begin to sell cheaper-to-produce winter blend gasoline – leading the nation’s motorists to likely see pump prices drop in the coming weeks.

Global

  • Oil prices have edged higher after EIA's report showed another decline in oil inventories.
  • The supply drop from the previous week has put another spotlight on limited global supply as fall approaches.
  • U.S.-imposed sanctions on Iran and sharp reductions in economically-stressed Venezuela are two factors driving concerns that this fall there could be major global crude supply challenges.
  • OPEC and its partners who have worked to reduce their combined total crude output since January 2017 are meeting on September 23 in Algiers to discuss compliance with their production agreement.
  • No major announcement is expected, but compliance and global supply concerns will be a focus of the meeting.
  • If EIA's report shows another decrease in domestic crude stocks, oil prices are likely to continue their ascent amid continuing global supply concerns.
