AAA MICHIGAN REPORTS:
STATEWIDE AVERAGE DAILY GAS PRICE DROPS EIGHT CENTS

Dearborn, Michigan (September 3, 2018) - AAA Michigan reports that compared to last week, the statewide average daily gas price has decreased. Michigan’s current daily statewide average is about $2.85 per gallon, about 8 cents less than last week’s average and about 23 cents more than this same time last year on Labor Day.

Compared to last week, Metro Detroit’s average daily gas price has decreased. Metro Detroit’s current average is about $2.90 per gallon, about 2 cents less than last week’s average and about 28 cents more than this same time last year on Labor Day.

Of the ten Michigan metro areas surveyed by AAA for self-serve unleaded fuel prices, the lowest average price can be found in the Flint area where it’s about $2.75 a gallon. The highest average price can be found in the Ann Arbor area for the second week in a row where it’s about $2.93 a gallon.

According to the latest reports from AAA:

State
Michigan ranked:
  • 21st in the nation for most expensive average daily gas price

    Regional
  • The region had the largest build in gasoline inventory of any in the country according to the EIA.
  • Inventories are at one of the highest levels of the year for the Great Lakes and Central region.
National

  • Gas demand spiked ahead of  the holiday weekend.
  • Demand jumped according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA).
  • The summer driving season made one final push with a spike in demand as motorists took to the nation’s roads for final summer vacations.
  • The jump in pump prices is expected be temporary as refiners begin to switchover to the cheaper-to-produce winter blend gasoline in mid-September.

Global

  • Oil prices have mostly increased following the release of EIA’s report that showed crude inventories fell.
  • Tightening domestic crude supplies remain a concern, as geopolitical challenges and reduced global supply have the potential to further reduce supply moving into the fall.
  • If crude stocks continue to drop, prices could climb further.
