AAA MICHIGAN REPORTS: STATEWIDE AVERAGE DAILY GAS PRICE DROPS A DIME

Dearborn, Michigan (August 19, 2018) -- AAA Michigan reports that compared to last week, the statewide average daily gas price has decreased. Michigan’s current daily statewide average is about $2.89 per gallon, about 10 cents less than last week’s average and about 48 cents more than this same time last year.

Compared to last week, Metro Detroit’s average daily gas price has decreased. Metro Detroit’s current average is about $2.94 per gallon, about 5 cents less than last week’s average and about 51 cents more than this same time last year.

Of the ten Michigan metro areas surveyed by AAA for self-serve unleaded fuel prices, the lowest average price can be found in the Traverse City area for the third week in a row where it’s about $2.75 a gallon. The highest average price can be found in the Marquette area where it’s about $2.96 a gallon.

According to the latest reports from AAA:

State
Michigan ranked:
  • 16th in the nation for most expensive average daily gas price
  • 10thin the nation for biggest change in average daily gas price compared to last week. (-04 cents)

    Regional
  • With a substantial 1.7 million bbl build, gasoline inventories are above the 53 million bbl mark for the first time in a month.
  • This was the first build for the region since the end of June and contributed to cheaper or stable prices across the Great Lakes and Central states.
National

  • Tepid gas demand is keeping pump prices mostly flat.
  • Prices around the country have mostly held flat or declined slightly following the release of the Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) weekly petroleum report that showed demand grew modestly.
  • Demand has not been as robust as the market expected for the past few weeks, helping to keep prices mostly stable.
  • As Labor Day approaches, demand is likely to spike, which could cause prices to increase as more motorists hit the roads to celebrate the end of summer.

Global

  • Oil prices made some gains due to a softening dollar andfollowing new data from the EIA that showed domestic crude oil inventories increased by an astonishing 6.8 million bbl last week.
  • Builds of this size are unusual for the summer in light of high demand for gasoline and other products created from crude.
  • The inventory increase helped push domestic crude prices lower immediately after the data was released, signaling that summer demand for crude may be waning.
  • Crude inventories in the U.S. are about 52 million bbl lower than they were at this time last year.
