AAA MICHIGAN REPORTS: STATEWIDE AVERAGE DAILY GAS PRICES DROPS ELEVEN CENTS

Dearborn, Michigan (July 22, 2018) -- AAA Michigan reports that compared to last week, the statewide average daily gas price has decreased. Michigan’s current daily statewide average is about $2.89 per gallon, about 11 cents less than last week’s average and about 49 cents more than this same time last year.

Compared to last week, Metro Detroit’s average daily gas price has decreased. Metro Detroit’s current average is about $2.94 per gallon, about 6 cents less than last week’s average and about 57 cents more than this same time last year.

Of the ten Michigan metro areas surveyed by AAA for self-serve unleaded fuel prices, the lowest average price can be found in the Grand Rapids/Muskegon/Holland area where it’s about $2.80 a gallon. The highest average price can be found in the Ann Arbor area where it’s about $2.97 a gallon.

According to the latest reports from AAA:

State
Michigan ranked:
  • 20th in the nation for most expensive average daily gas price
  • 3rdin the nation for biggest change in average daily gas price compared to last week. (-11)

    Regional
  • Gasoline inventories dropped by just a nearly 540,000 bbl.
  • Total inventories remain above 53 million bbl, according to the EIA, which is where levels sat this time last year and are higher than July’s prior to 2017.

National

  • Pump prices have fallen as exports take a step back.
  • Gas prices have slid recently amid a decline in exports.
  • U.S. exports of gasoline fell by 452,000 b/d to 734,000 b/d.
  • If demand for exports continues to fall, U.S. inventory remains robust and domestic demand stabilizes, drivers may see continued relief at the pump in the coming week.

Global

  • Oil prices have trended higher following news from EIA on record breaking crude production in the U.S.
  • Total crude production in the U.S. hit a new milestone recently– its highest rate ever recorded since the EIA began reporting its data.
  • Crude production has been well over 10 million b/d most of this year, so the new record high was anticipated.
  • Increased crude prices and drilling investment have worked together to support growing crude production in the U.S.
  • With nearly 100 more active oil rigs over last year's count at this time, according to Baker Hughes, Inc., increased oil production shows few signs of slowing down through the second half of 2018.
  • Growth in domestic oil production helped total crude inventories around the country increase.
