AAA MICHIGAN REPORTS: STATEWIDE AVERAGE DAILY GAS PRICE DIPS TWO CENTS

Dearborn, Michigan (April 29, 2018) -- AAA Michigan reports that the statewide average daily gas price decreased about two cents from last week. Michigan’s current daily statewide average is about $2.85 per gallon, about two cents less than last week’s average and about 42 cents more than this same time last year.

Metro Detroit’s average daily gas increased about one cent from last week. Metro Detroit’s current average is about $2.87 per gallon, about one cent more than last week’s average and about 45 cents more than this same time last year.

Of the ten Michigan metro areas surveyed by AAA for self-serve unleaded fuel prices, the lowest average price can be found in the Marquette area for the third week in row, where it’s about $2.79 a gallon. The highest average price can be found in the Ann Arob area, where it’s about $2.89 a gallon.

According to the latest reports from AAA:

State
Michigan ranked:
  • < >in the nation for most expensive average daily gas price< >in the nation for the biggest change in average monthly gas price (+19 cents)Gas price averages in the region are as much as 35-cents more expensive than last year.
  • Some states in the region saw price jumps among the top 10 states in the country.
  • On Thursday, two fires broke out at Husky Energy’s refinery in Superior, Wisconsin.
  • Residents in the immediate area were evacuated.
  • That evacuation has since been lifted and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
  • According to the company’s website, the 50,000 b/d refinery processes light had heavy crude oil, in addition to asphalt, gasoline, diesel and heavy fuel oils.
  • This incident has potential for gas prices in the surrounding area – including Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota – to see even higher spikes
  • The impact (short or long term) will be determined by the extent of damage to the refinery and how long operations will be down.

National

  • The increase in the national average for unleaded gasoline can be largely attributed to gas stations continuing to switchover to the more expensive summer blend of gasoline, which helps reduce excessive evaporation when outside temperatures rise.
  • Gas stations around the country must begin selling summer blend gasoline by June 1 to comply with federal mandates.
  • Demand for gasoline took a notable back step, according to the Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) petroleum report.
  • Gasoline demand is now more in line with rates typically seen during the spring driving season.
  •  AAA predicts that gas prices may potentially increase by 5 to 10 cents more through Memorial Day, but does not expect the national average to hit $3/gallon this year.

Global

  • Oil prices have been mostly stable, following EIA’s report that revealed crude inventories moved higher.
  • Total U.S. crude oil output increased.
  • The big news in U.S. crude production this week is in exports, which surged to 2.331 million b/d last week – the highest weekly estimate on record from the EIA.
  • The new record high bested the last record, which was set in mid-February of this year.
  • The crude export rate has doubled since the same time last year.
  • This surge in exports is attributed to Congress and the Obama Administration lifting the 40-year crude oil export ban in 2015, alongside record-breaking domestic production in the United States.
  • Steadily increasing crude exports from the U.S. will likely put another spotlight on the crude reduction agreement between OPEC and non-OPEC producers, which is set to expire at the end of 2018.
  • Amid rising global demand and reduced output from OPEC and its partners, including Russia, the U.S. has been able to sell more crude to foreign buyers.
