AAA MICHIGAN REPORTS: STATEWIDE AVERAGE DAILY GAS PRICE UP THREE CENTS

Dearborn, Michigan (March 4, 2018) -- AAA Michigan reports that the statewide average daily gas price increased about 3 cents. Michigan’s current daily statewide average is about $2.53 per gallon, about 3 cents more than last week’s average and about 11 cents more than this same time last year.

Metro Detroit’s average daily gas price increased about 6 cents. Metro Detroit’s current average is about $2.51 per gallon, about 6 cents more than last week’s average and about 19 cents more than this same time last year.

Of the ten Michigan metro areas surveyed by AAA for self-serve unleaded fuel prices, the lowest average price can be found in the Flint area, where it’s about $2.50 a gallon. The highest average price can be found in the Marquette area for the fifth week in a row, where it’s about $2.62 a gallon.

According to the latest reports from AAA:

State
Michigan ranked:
  • < >in the nation for most expensive average daily gas price< >in the nation for biggest change in weekly average daily gas price (+3 cents)< >in the nation for biggest change in monthly average daily gas price (-13 cents)Gas prices decreased at the pump all across the Great Lakes and Central region except in Indiana.
  • There has been a slight build of gasoline inventories in the region.
  • Although the region has seen steady inventory build, current levels sit below this time last year yet they are ahead of the five-year average.
National

  • Gas prices have increased as demand holds strong.
  • The national average has increased slightly after the Energy Information Administration's (EIA) weekly petroleum report showed that gasoline demand is holding strong in the country.
  • Although demand took a slight backstep, it has been up almost 4 percent higher than the same four-week period last year.
  • This could mean that demand this month is higher than the estimates released on a weekly basis, helping to push pump prices higher amid winter refinery maintenance that has reduced gasoline production across the country

Global

  • Recent oil prices trended higher due to a weaker dollar.
  • EIA's petroleum report revealed that crude oil inventories grew.
  • Crude runs at refineries inched up, marking slower than expected growth.
  • At the same time, domestic production continues to boom, which could cause inventories to continue to increase.
  • If they do, oil prices may take a further hit.
