Dearborn, Michigan (May 6, 2018) -- AAA Michigan reports that the statewide average daily gas price remains steady compared to last week. Michigan’s current daily statewide average is about $2.85 per gallon, about the same price as last week’s average and about 50 cents more than this same time last year.

Metro Detroit’s average daily gas price remains steady compared to last week. Metro Detroit’s current average is about $2.87 per gallon, about the same price as last week’s average and about 51 cents more than this same time last year.

Of the ten Michigan metro areas surveyed by AAA for self-serve unleaded fuel prices, the lowest average price can be found in the Marquette area for the fourth week in row, where it’s about $2.78 a gallon. The highest average price can be found in the Ann Arbor area,  for the second week in a row, where it’s about $2.91 a gallon.

According to the latest reports from AAA:

State
Michigan ranked:
  • < >in the nation for most expensive average daily gas price< >in the nation for the least change in average weekly gas price (none)Some regional states may see prices spike a little higher than other surrounding states following fires that broke out at Husky Energy’s refinery in Superior, Wisconsin.
  • The impact on prices (short or long term) will be determined by the extent of damage to the refinery.
  • According to the company’s website, the 50,000 b/d refinery processes light had heavy crude oil, in addition to asphalt, gasoline, diesel and heavy fuel oils.
  • With a 430,000 bbl draw, inventories in the region fell to 56.6 million bbl according to the latest EIA data.

National

  • The national average has inched up while demand holds steady
  • Gas prices around the country have creeped up, mostly due to continuing efforts to switchover stocks to the more expensive summer blend to meet federal mandates by June 1.
  • Geopolitical events, decreased global supply/OPEC cuts, expensive crude oil, record U.S. production and high demand have all contributed toward driving up gas prices since Janusty
  • Demand has been flat.
  • Demand estimates have been more in line with the usual spring driving season than the estimate reported in the middle of April – a record-breaking figure that more closely resembles demand rates seen during the high-demand summer driving season.

Global

  • Oil prices have ticked up higher following reports that President Trump will potentially decline to recertify the Iran nuclear deal on May 12 and may impose new sanctions on the country.
  • Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif responded and said that the country is unwilling to renegotiate the deal it set with the U.S. in 2015 under the Obama Administration.
  • The decision to not recertify the deal could increase tensions in the volatile region, leading to global supply disruptions.
  • Additionally, EIA’spetroleum status report noted that U.S. crude production hit another record high.
  • The growth in production occurred alongside growth in crude inventories.
