The highest average price can be found in the Ann Arbor area for the third week in a row, where it’s about $2.97 a gallon.

According to the latest reports from AAA:

State
Michigan ranked:
  • < >in the nation for most expensive average daily gas price< >in the nation for the biggest change in average weekly gas price (+7)Gasoline inventories in the Great Lakes and Central states have declined steadily for eight weeks.
  • With the latest draw of 340,000 bbl, total inventories sit at 56.2 million bbl, which are on par with levels in April 2017.

National

  • The jump in demand has helped lift pump prices.
  • Gas prices have moved higher after the Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) report revealed that demand jumped up to 9.8 million bbl from the previous week’s measurement at 9.1 million bbl.
  • Gas stations across the country are switching over to the more expensive summer blend in order to comply with federal mandates by June 1, which has contributed to drivers seeing prices rise.
  • On the supply side, total gas stocks fell.
  • Stocks are lower than they were at this time last year, which has also put pressure on pump prices.

Global

  • Oil prices have climbed following President Trump’s decision to re-impose economic sanctions on Iran and withdraw the U.S. from the Iran Nuclear Deal.

    • Set in 2015 under the Obama Administration, the U.S. – along with the European Union, five permanent members of the UN Security Council, and Germany – entered into the deal that lifted economic sanctions on Tehran in exchange for the country downsizing its nuclear program.
    • Some of the pre-2015 sanctions targeted the Iranian energy sector and impeded Iran’s ability to sell oil.
    • With those sanctions being re-imposed in the next 3-6 months, Iran’s crude exports are forecasted to decrease, contributing to already declining global crude supplies amid growing global demand.
  • Also lifting crude prices even further, EIA’s weekly report showed that crude inventories fell.
  • Crude inventories around the country are lower than were they were in May 2017.
  • Domestic crude inventories have fallen steadily since OPEC and other large producers, including Russia, have reduced their combined output since the beginning of 2017. The agreement is set to expire at the end of this year.
