AAA MICHIGAN REPORTS: STATEWIDE AVERAGE DAILY GAS PRICE SINKS SIX CENTS

Dearborn, Michigan (January 7, 2018) -- AAA Michigan reports that the statewide average daily gas price decreased about 6 cents. Michigan’s current daily statewide average is about $2.63 per gallon, about 6 cents less than last week’s average and about 11 cents more than this same time last year.

Metro Detroit’s average daily gas price decreased about 3 cents. Metro Detroit’s current average is about $2.64 per gallon, about 3 cents less than last week’s average and about 15 cents more than this same time last year.

Of the ten Michigan metro areas surveyed by AAA for self-serve unleaded fuel prices, the lowest average price can be found in the Saginaw/Bay City/Midland area, where it’s about $2.55 a gallon. The highest average price can be found in the Jackson area for the second week in a row, where it’s about $2.66 a gallon.

According to the latest reports from AAA:

State
Michigan ranked:
  • < >in the nation for most expensive average daily gas price< >in the nation for biggest change in weekly average daily gas price (-6 cents)< >in the nation for biggest change in monthly average daily gas price (+8 cents)Prices at the pump are expected to decrease as motorists get back to regular driving schedules and driving frequency declines with the colder temperatures.
National

  • The flat price follows the Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) latest weekly petroleum report showing a drop in demand.
  • Although the number fell by a significant amount, the demand figure was still higher than last year’s number at the same time.
  • This contributed to the higher prices drivers paid at the pump during the 2017 holiday season.
  • With lower demand, gasoline stocks around the country grew.
  • Middling demand and sufficient stocks are likely to continue stabilizing prices at the pump.

Global
  • Oil prices have dipped after EIA’s weekly report showed that crude inventories dropped.
  • High crude input rates contributed to the drawdown, which are up nearly 1 million bbl over last year at the same time.
  • With lower demand for refined products like gasoline, high price expectations for crude have dropped because consumers are driving less during the winter months and purchasing fewer gallons of gasoline.
  • As January continues, market observers are likely to look for indications that tightening crude supplies will grow tighter as demand increases in the warmer months ahead.
