AAA Celebrates Diversity and Inclusion Initiative with Cultural Music Series

Featuring Local Performance Groups
 
WHO:                 Furteelay Shokeen and AAA’s 1,700+ Michigan employees
                             (Although attendance at the inaugural concert is limited to employees and the media, AAA is considering opening future concerts to the public.)
 
 WHAT:              AAA’s kicks off a celebration of its Diversity and Inclusion initiative with the first-ever Music on the Patio Summer Series. The three-part series will be heating up the summer with exciting music and cultural dance performances by local award-winning artists.

  • A specialperformance by award-winning Furteelay Shokeen.
    • “Furteelay” means agile in Punjabi and Shokeen translates to “youth of Punjab.”
    • The group’s goal is to spread the awareness of Bhangra throughout the greater Detroit community.
    • Bhangra is a type of popular music combining Punjabi folk traditions with Western pop music.
    • < >Audience participation will be encouraged.
      Food trucks will be on site featuring Indian-inspired foods.
      FREE ice cream will be available for attendees.

WHY:                  The Diversity and Inclusion team was created by AAA to lead its efforts to make certain all voices and perspectives are heard and valued across the entire organization. This initiative is focused on celebrating diversity as an employer and membership organization.  AAA will continue to embrace the diverse perspectives and varied backgrounds of its employees and members. It is guided by this statement:  We are unique as our fingerprints that mark individual human identity.  Great things happen when we come together and connect our unique talents, ideas, cultures and experiences.
 
                             In addition to receiving the Michigan Diversity Council’s 2018 Diversity Leadership Award and being a first-time participating sponsor of the 2018 Motor City PRIDE Festival and Parade, AAA has held/will hold the following internal celebratory events in support of this initiative:
 
  • Diwali (or Deepavali) The ancient Hindu of lights.
  • Chinese New YearThe celebration based on the Chinese lunar calendar.
  • (Upcoming) Ramadan        The Islamic practice of daylight fasting during the last month of
    the Muslim calendar.
